Most of us are used to seeing the smooth-coat Chihuahua like celebrity Paris Hilton’s dog Tinkerbell or the infamous “Yo Quiero Taco Bell” Chihuahua.
But despite the fact that these fawn colored, short-haired Chihuahuas have taken over the spotlight, Chihuahua dogs can have multiple variations in coat length, color, head shape and body size that you may have not seen before.
So move on over, Tinkerbell, here are 8 other types of Chihuahua dogs that will melt your heart with their unique traits.

Coat Length
1. Smooth Coat Chihuahua Dog
This gorgeous, chocolate Chihuahua dog, commonly referred to as a short haired Chihuahua, displays one of two official coat variations that Chihuahua dogs can have – smooth coat or long coat.
The smooth coat Chihuahua has a short, shiny coat with areas of thicker hair around the neck and tail and thinner hair at the head and face.
While their long haired Chihuahua friends have quite the opposite, it’s entirely possible for two short haired Chihuahuas to produce long haired Chihuahua offspring like the cute dog in our next example:
2. Long Haired Chihuahua
The long haired Chihuahua is characterized by a soft coat of longer hair around specific areas of the body including fringed hair at the ears, a ruff at the neck, feathered feet, a plumed tail, stomach “frill” and hind leg “pants”.
You might think that because of these lovely locks that the long haired chihuahua would shed more than a short-haired, but it’s actually the opposite!
Smooth-coat chihuahuas have an undercoat, while long haired do not, making them shed almost twice as much.
Don’t let the shedding deter you from the smooth-coat Chihuahua though.
Whether long-coat or smooth-coat, grooming a Chihuahua dog with regular brushing will keep shedding under control. You can use a deshedding grooming tool like this one
So whatever coat-length you prefer for your Chihuahua dog, you simply can’t go wrong when it comes to adorable.
Coloring
3. Irish Marked Chihuahua Dog
Just like variations in coat length, the coloring of a Chihuahua’s coat can range endlessly from whites, browns, reds, blacks, and even blues along with unique patterns and markings such as spotted, merle, brindle, sable, piebald and more.
This gorgeous “Irish Marked”, long haired Chihuahua with red and white coloring, for example, is quite different from what we’ve seen so far.
An Irish marked Chihuahua is described as having any darker color combined with a white chest, neck ring and legs. Just one of many unique color and pattern combinations a Chihuahua can have!

4. Blue Chihuahua Dog
On the opposite side of the color spectrum, you’ll find the more rare, blue Chihuahua characterized by a silver and grey coat with a hint of blue.
The blue Chihuahua above has a merle pattern and is long-haired, while “true blues” are distinguished by blue feet pads, noses, nails and occasionally eye rims.
Head Shape
5. Apple Head Chihuahua Dog
When it comes to head shape, the most common shapes give name to the apple head Chihuahua and deer head Chihuahua.
Like the name, the apple head Chihuahua is characterized by the obvious round, apple shape and short snout shown on the above chocolate, long-haired Chihuahua.
This type of head shape is more desirable and the only head shape for Chihuahuas that meets the standards set for admission into dog shows.

6. Deer Head Chihuahua Dog
The deer head Chihuahua is like having a little, pet Bambi with it’s resemblance to that of a deer.
Deer head Chihuahuas feature longer, narrower snouts compared to their apple headed companions. They often have a longer body and extremities (but not always the case), which brings us to our next varietal trait – size.
Size
7. Chihuahua Size
Chihuahua size can vary from over a foot tall to standing at just a mere 4 inches high. Their weight typically ranges between 2-6 pounds, so no matter how tall or short, they’re still the smallest dog breed around.

8. Teacup Chihuahua
A teacup Chihuahua is an unofficial term for describing a Chihuahua dog that is extra small or as seen here fitting into a teacup.
This mini Chihuahua is merely the result of attempting to breed the smallest chihuahuas to create a dog with teeny tiny features, which breeders then market to eager buyers as “teacup chihuahuas”.
In reality, this is just lose jargon to describe the dog’s size, but the term is in no way recognized as a separate breed of chihuahua dog. Whatever you want to call them, they sure are cute!
Despite the differences we’ve explored in coat length, coloring, head shape and size, the Chihuahua dog is officially recognized as just one breed as there is generally a lot of unpredictability to which features will flourish when it comes to breeding Chihuahua dogs.
